Morocco’s Fuel Prices Soar: Industry Calls for Government Action Amid Cost of Living Crisis

Faced with the rise in fuel prices, accentuated by the high cost of living, professionals in the sector are calling on the government and making proposals to alleviate the effects.
In an interview with the website Alyaoum24, the Secretary General of the National Petroleum and Gas Union, Houcine El Yamani, said that the average price of diesel has reached, in recent days, 11 dirhams.
In detail, this price includes the amount of the price at the international level, the average amount of the tax imposed by the State (3.50 dirhams), and the profit margin of the distributors (1.50 dirhams), he explained, adding that with these rates, "the distributors are taking advantage of this situation to make more profit".
To lower fuel prices in Morocco, the state should allow oil refining in Morocco, proposing, moreover, the revision of the tax on fuels or the search for formulas to subsidize petroleum products, in addition to the need to limit the profits made by the distributors, he proposed.
