Morocco’s Foreign Minister Meets Israeli Diplomat in First High-Level Talks Since Normalization

In office in Rabat since January 26, David Govrin, the chargé d’affaires of the Hebrew State in Morocco, had a meeting with Nasser Bourita, the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs. On the agenda of the exchanges between the two men, the strengthening of bilateral relations between Morocco and Israel.
Since his arrival in Rabat, David Govrin has met several members of the Jewish community based in Morocco, and visited places full of symbols such as the Mellah of Rabat, the former Jewish quarter of the capital, or the Rabbi Shalom Zaoui synagogue. On his Twitter account, he stressed that this is the first time he has met the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs. Before being assigned to Rabat, David Govrin was the ambassador of the Hebrew State in Cairo from 2016 to 2020. His mission in Rabat will be to expand the political, tourist, economic and cultural ties between Morocco and Israel.
According to the tripartite declaration Morocco-USA-Israel, signed in Rabat on December 22, 2020, under the presidency of King Mohammed VI, the opening of liaison offices in Rabat and Tel Aviv, as well as a gradual resumption of diplomatic relations between the two countries, are planned. As for the Moroccan diplomat Abderrahim Bayoud, the head designated "on an interim basis" of Morocco’s liaison office in Tel Aviv, he will take up his new duties this week.
