Morocco’s First University Synagogue Opens, Promoting Interfaith Harmony

The Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) has inaugurated a university synagogue, a first in Morocco and the Arab world. The place of worship, located next to its new mosque, reflects the coexistence of religions in Morocco.
The result of a collaboration between the Mimouna Association, a Moroccan non-profit organization, and Gabriel Malka, professor and director of the Higher Institute of Biological and Paramedical Sciences at UM6P, the place of worship will be used as a place of prayer, conferences and gathering for Jewish students.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Rabbi Elie Abadie, the Chief Rabbi of the Jewish Council of the United Arab Emirates, and Magda Haroun, President of the Egyptian Jewish Community.
On this occasion, the President of the Jewish Community of Marrakech-Essaouira, Jacky Kadoch, installed the mezuzah of the synagogue. Members of the Jewish communities of Marrakech and Fez performed the first prayer.
