Morocco Faces Obesity Crisis as 59% of Adults Classified as Overweight

An international report shows the urgency of acting against obesity in Morocco. Adults - especially women - are the most exposed.
The report of the Global Atlas of Obesity, published on March 4 on the occasion of World Obesity Day, is alarming. 59% of adults have a body mass index (BMI) greater than 25 kg/m², a threshold associated with overweight and obesity, the report states. This trend is not without consequences for public health. In 2021, 16,524 premature deaths related to diseases associated with a high BMI, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and certain cancers, were recorded in Morocco.
