Morocco Faces Growing Pressure to Sever Ties with Israel Amid Gaza Conflict

In Morocco, calls for the cancellation of the normalization of diplomatic relations between the kingdom and Israel continue to multiply. The signatories of a petition have addressed correspondence to King Mohammed VI and Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch in this regard.
The pressure is far from subsiding on the rapprochement between Morocco and Israel. Activists from different regions of the kingdom have recently launched a petition on the global platform "Avaaz" urging Morocco to break its economic and diplomatic ties with Israel, reports Hespress. They believe that the maintenance of relations with Israel by the countries of the region has contributed to prolonging the duration of conflicts and perpetuating crimes and massacres against the populations of Gaza and the West Bank.
For the effectiveness of their action, these activists have addressed a letter to King Mohammed VI and Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, asking Morocco to adopt a historic position by freezing all economic and diplomatic relations with Israel "until the latter ceases its hostilities and provides assistance to the inhabitants of Gaza". While the humanitarian situation is deteriorating in the Gaza Strip, the IDF is continuing its military campaign, launched in retaliation for the unprecedented Hamas attacks on Israeli soil on October 7.
According to the signatories of the petition, Morocco’s severance of its diplomatic and economic relations with Israel would encourage other countries in the region to follow its example, which would represent real pressure on the Hebrew state. The cessation of trade with Tel Aviv will not have a negative impact on the Moroccan economy, as economic relations between the two countries remain relatively weak, explain the experts. After an increase during the first ten months of last year, the value of trade between Israel and Morocco has recorded a 61% drop since October.
