Morocco Faces Critical Water Shortage, Unveils National Plan to Combat Stress

Morocco, like Tunisia and Algeria, is on the list of countries with a high level of water stress, according to a report by the World Resources Institute (WRI).
This new situation is worrying for Morocco. To counter this recurring water shortage, the site barlamane.com reveals the existence of a National Water Plan, aimed at ensuring the water security of Morocco. This Plan, according to the same media, aims to respond to this worrying situation of water stress. Among the actions it recommends are the desalination of seawater, the capture of rainwater, the desalination of brackish water and the reuse of treated wastewater.
A few years ago, the World Resources Institute had already predicted a situation of water stress for Morocco, in the long term, in 2015. Its alert was reinforced by the UN World Water Development Report 2019. It is titled: "Leaving No One Behind". It was published by UNESCO, for UN-Water.
According to the same media, access to basic water services in Morocco, in urban areas, has reached 96%, compared to only 65% in the rural areas of the country. And the industrial, agricultural and domestic sectors had been identified as the most voracious in water consumption.
