Morocco Faces Critical Blood Shortage as Donor Numbers Plummet Post-Summer

As every year, and just after the summer period, blood transfusion centers are experiencing a severe shortage in Morocco.
Blood bags are empty in the transfusion centers to the point of worrying the health authorities who are already sounding the alarm. According to the daily Assabah, the precious liquid has become a rare commodity.
However, the causes of this severe shortage are known. They are linked to the summer period for which several blood bags have been mobilized.
For the newspaper, the number of blood donors has dropped sharply during the June to September period, unlike the demand which continues to increase.
The city of Casablanca, whose necessary bags are around 400, is struggling to gather this number to meet the needs of its hospitals and clinics.
To this end, these centers only use blood bags in case of extreme emergency, namely hemorrhages during childbirth, an accident, a surgical operation and chronic needs (blood diseases and cancers).
To address the most urgent needs, last August, the National Blood Transfusion and Hematology Center (CNTSH) sounded the alarm about the lack of blood bags in several cities and regions of the Kingdom.
Since then, the CNTSH has organized several awareness campaigns to encourage Moroccans to donate blood in order to avoid shortages in Moroccan hospitals and clinics, the same media recalls.
