Morocco Faces Critical Blood Shortage as Donation Rates Fall Below 1%

The situation is worrying and the alarm bells are ringing. Moroccans, even if they understand the importance of donating blood, are an infinitesimal proportion to make this gesture that saves lives. They are less than 1%. A low rate that is pushing blood transfusion centers to sound the alarm.
Blood donation, according to Al Massae, is not a practice really rooted in Moroccan society. The official statistics made public by the regional blood transfusion centers are worrying and call into question the strategies to be adopted so that Moroccans really take an interest in the matter.
Indeed, according to the daily, less than 1% of Moroccans respond to the call of the regional blood transfusion centers. A figure below the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO).
This is why blood collection operations have been carried out in the regional blood transfusion centers, universities, schools, businesses and administrations. The objective, the newspaper points out, is to achieve 363,377 blood donations.
According to the latest statistics for the first quarter of 2019, a total of 90,880 blood donors were recorded, compared to 40,869 donors for the same period last year, which bodes well for the end of the year.
Likewise, adds Al Masse, the blood transfusion centers in Rabat and Casablanca plan to develop new blood derivatives in 2020.
