Morocco Faces Billions in Losses as Doctor Exodus Threatens Healthcare System

The British Medical journal has just published a rather worrying report on the migration of doctors and health executives. It would cost Morocco between 1.1 billion and 2.767 billion dirhams.

The situation regarding the migration of medical staff from Morocco to abroad is becoming worrying. The daily Al Massae, cited by H24info, indicates that this increases the risk of maternal and under-5 mortality. But in addition to this, it results in huge losses for the state that invests in the education and training of doctors, who then put their skills at the service of countries other than Morocco.

The general secretary of the independent union of public sector doctors (SIMSP), El Mountadar Alaoui, explained that between 7,000 and 8,000 doctors have migrated to France. Some have gone to other European Union countries or the United States, in search of better working and living conditions.

But faced with the trend that is more pronounced among public sector doctors, the Ministry of Health is struggling to find adequate solutions to curb the massive exodus of doctors. In total, the shortage of doctors is estimated at 32,000, and that of nurses at 67,000. And every day, collective resignations are taking place in the public hospitals of the kingdom, the same source said.
