Morocco Faces Backlash Over Alleged Discriminatory Transport Policy for Sub-Saharan Migrants

The leak of the minutes of a meeting of the Ministry of Equipment and Transport with road transport companies has been the source of controversy since Tuesday. According to the rumor, road transport companies are asked to require valid residence permits from sub-Saharan nationals in Morocco before any ticket purchase.

Members of the sub-Saharan community in Morocco were outraged by this measure, which they described as "racist" and "discriminatory".

Immediately translated into action by the road transport companies, in particular the Moroccan Transport Company (CTM), it was strongly criticized, fueling a lively controversy on social networks.

Shortly afterwards, although no official reaction was made to respond to the criticisms made against this decision, the CTM, strongly condemned and under pressure from its passengers, made a clarification in an attempt to restore calm.

According to a source from the Ministry of Transport, contacted by the 2M channel, "the companies that displayed the announcements misunderstood the instructions, because at no time did we require such requests," particularly the verification of the residence permit.

This same source, who requested anonymity, will observe that these are measures that rather target "group travel in particular and do not target individuals".

Such arguments were brushed aside by several sub-Saharan sources contacted by 2M. They indeed confirmed the real difficulties experienced by their members on the ground, including at the Qamra bus station in Rabat, where several community members were prevented from buying travel tickets.
