Morocco Eyes Swiss Mowag Piranha Armored Vehicles to Modernize Military

Morocco, which is working to strengthen and modernize its armed forces, is showing interest in Swiss infantry combat armored vehicles.
The Moroccan army "would be interested" in the Swiss Mowag Piranha infantry combat vehicles (IFV), reports Maghreb-Intelligence, specifying that it wants to replace its South African Ratel, French AMX-10P, VAB VCI and Dutch YPR-765 infantry vehicles used for decades with these Swiss weapons. A state-of-the-art equipment known for its effectiveness.
Manufactured by the Swiss company Mowag Corporation, a subsidiary of the General Dynamics group, in the late 1960s, the Mowag Piranha is a light armored personnel carrier. The Piranha V comes in three variants - IFV with a 30mm cannon, anti-tank with a missile launcher and artillery with a 120mm cannon - a single family of platforms. The vehicle would meet the various needs of the Moroccan army. Designed to carry a new turret armed with a cannon up to 40mm caliber, the Piranha IV can also be equipped with a turret with a 105mm cannon. Its chassis remains more or less identical to the other Piranha models, such as the Piranha II which is still in production.

It remains to be seen whether Morocco will soon acquire the Mowag Piranha. In 2005, the kingdom had acquired 40 former Swiss M109 artillery guns. Had the Royal Navy special forces used the Brügger & Thomet MP9 submachine gun, designed and manufactured in Switzerland.
