Morocco Eyes F-35 Fighter Jets, Potentially Shifting Regional Air Power Balance

Morocco is showing strong interest in the stealthy F-35 fighter jet. During the IDEX 2025 international defense exhibition held in Abu Dhabi, the Delegate Minister in charge of the National Defense Administration, Abdellatif Loudiyi, exchanged with representatives of the American manufacturer Lockheed Martin.

The company detailed the capabilities of the aircraft, highlighting its advanced performance and cutting-edge technologies. This exchange allowed Moroccan military officials to access precise data on the aircraft’s capabilities, particularly in terms of stealth and connectivity. According to several reports, the kingdom could be on the verge of becoming the first Arab and African country to acquire the F-35, a fifth-generation aircraft currently in service with the US armed forces and a few select allies.

This rapprochement is part of a context of consolidation of military relations between the United States and Morocco. A dynamic confirmed by General Charles Brown, Chief of Staff of the US Air Force, during a telephone exchange with his Moroccan counterpart, General Mohamed Berrid, on February 11. This conversation would have notably focused on the intensification of bilateral cooperation and the possible integration of the latest generation equipment into the arsenal of the Royal Armed Forces.

According to consistent sources, Rabat is preparing to receive, in the coming months, an initial order of 32 aircraft. A contract estimated at more than $17 billion, which includes both acquisition and maintenance costs over a 45-year period.

The interest in the F-35 comes as Morocco continues to upgrade its military equipment, notably through agreements with several international partners. In recent years, Rabat has considerably strengthened its air fleet, with the purchase of modernized F-16 fighter jets, surveillance drones and advanced defense systems.
