Morocco Extends COVID-19 State of Emergency and Lockdown Measures Until May 20

The Government Council chaired by Saad Eddine El Othmani adopted, this Saturday, draft decree 2.20.300 extending the state of health emergency in Morocco until May 20.
This draft decree authorizes the competent public authorities to take the necessary measures for the confinement of populations, as well as to prevent any movement, except in case of extreme necessity, reports Le360.
During this period as well, gatherings are prohibited, as is the opening of stores considered "non-essential" under the decree-law adopted on March 20. Due to the evolution of Covid-19 in the country, Morocco declared a state of health emergency and mandatory confinement of the population.
The initial 30-day period not having been sufficient to contain the spread of the virus, Moroccans must remain at home for four more weeks and resign themselves to spending a month of Ramadan under the sign of the coronavirus.
During these 30 days, more than 25,000 people were arrested for non-compliance with the state of emergency. To date, Morocco has 2,670 confirmed cases, including 137 deaths and 298 recoveries.
