Morocco Explores Marine Current Energy in Push for Sustainable Power

Following the announcement by King Mohammed VI during his speech on the Green March on the exploitation of marine currents, a special commission has been set up to develop a roadmap on the development of this energy source in January 2021.
During a videoconference, the executives of the Ministry of Energy spoke about examining the means for the exploitation of marine current energy, according to a press release from the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Environment. According to the same document, this commission should be composed of representatives from the energy and mining sector, the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN). It should also take into account representatives from the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) and the Institute for Solar Energy and New Energies Research (IRESEN).
The same press release specifies that this videoconference also focused on marine current energy. For the minister, it will be necessary to reflect on the means of exploiting this energy. He also invited the executives to develop medium and long-term projects in order to contribute to the diversification of energy production sources, in accordance with the objectives of the National Energy Strategy. These actions should be reinforced by scientific research in this field.
For now, the global installed capacity in offshore wind could reach 228 gigawatts compared to 10 gigawatts for marine current energy by 2030, according to forecasts from the International Renewable Energy Agency.
