Morocco Explores Alternatives to Cannabis Farming Amid Environmental Concerns

The president of the provincial council of Chefchaouen, Abderrahim Bouazza, spoke about cannabis cultivation during an online debate session, in which he proposed alternatives. This meeting is in line with the preparation of the annual report of the Economic, Social and Environmental Council (CESE) on the subject.
Experts and specialized executives participated in this meeting focused on the theme "cannabis cultivation in Morocco: state of play." On this occasion, the PAM (Authenticity and Modernity Party) elected official looked at the issue of cultivated areas and the "negative repercussions" of cannabis cultivation on the environment and the overexploitation of water resources. He also discussed the economic impact of this cultivation on both the Moroccan economy and the incomes of small farmers. Not to mention the social consequences of this activity, including poverty, social exclusion, crime and the increase in suicide cases.
Ultimately, Abderrahim Bouazza proposed alternatives to cannabis cultivation. "The alternatives to cannabis cultivation must be based on the triptych: legalization, valorization and territorialization," he said.
