Morocco Expels European MPs for Unauthorized Entry Attempt, Calls It ’Provocation’

Nasser Bourita, the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, described as a "provocation" the attempt by three European deputies to enter the city of Laâyoune as part of an observation mission, without fulfilling the required formalities. This led to their expulsion by the Moroccan authorities.
"Like other countries in the world, any visit to Morocco, whether official, tourist or for specific missions, is subject to clear organizational procedures within a regulated framework, in accordance with the laws in force. [...] Any person who respects these rules is welcome. We will apply the law to those who try to violate it," Bourita said at a press conference in Rabat.
The Moroccan Foreign Minister described as "provocations" this attempt by the three European deputies to enter Laâyoune, in the Moroccan Sahara, stressing that these "provocations have no impact on Morocco, which fully exercises its sovereignty over its southern provinces, as over the rest of its national territory."
The Moroccan minister recalled that the kingdom "welcomes millions of tourists every year, as well as high-ranking officials and official delegations, without any major problems," citing as an example the recent visit of the President of the French Senate, Gérard Larcher, to Laâyoune, as well as "many trips by international businessmen and officials."
The three European deputies Isa Serra (Podemos, Spain), Catarina Martins (Bloco de Esqueda, Portugal) and Jussi Sáramo (Left Alliance, Finland) had traveled to Laâyoune last week to carry out an observation mission on compliance with the decision of the EU Court of Justice annulling the fisheries agreements between the EU and Morocco.
The deputies claim to have been blocked without reason at the airport before being expelled to Las Palmas. They have seized the European Union authorities so that sanctions are taken against Morocco. Spain has condemned this attitude of the Moroccan authorities and ordered its ambassador in Rabat to "personally" get involved in this matter. For its part, the Polisario Front has "energetically" condemned the expulsion of the three deputies.
