Morocco Expands Water Access: New Desalination Plant to Double Laâyoune's Capacity

The Director General of the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) visited several construction sites in the city of Laâyoune, aimed at strengthening the drinking water supply and liquid sanitation. These construction sites concern ongoing projects and are intended to provide the population with access to water.

The drinking water supply of the city of Laâyoune will be reinforced by a new seawater desalination plant, with an additional flow of 26,000 m³/day. This project, which will be commissioned in June 2021, will increase the production capacity of the seawater desalination plants to 52,000 m³/day.

In addition to the plant, the project will also strengthen the production of raw water, the construction of 3 reservoirs with a total capacity of 5,500 m³, pumping stations and the implementation of a remote management system. With a total cost of 440 million dirhams, this seawater desalination project will meet the needs of the city of Laâyoune and the surrounding centers until 2040.

Morocco also plans to build a wastewater treatment plant, in order to preserve the environment while using the treated water for the irrigation of green spaces. These projects are part of the Office’s vision for the mobilization of non-conventional water resources and contribute to water savings.

In addition to visiting the construction sites, the Director General also held meetings with the Wali to examine the progress of the various drinking water supply and sanitation projects.
