Morocco Expands Urban Video Surveillance to Boost City Security Nationwide

The Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, announced the generalization of the installation of video surveillance systems to strengthen security in cities and provinces of Morocco.
Abdelouafi Laftit recalled, in his response to a written question from Istiqlali deputy Abdelkader El Kihel, that his department had implemented 24 projects related to the installation of these video surveillance systems in several governorates and provinces such as Fez, Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier or Casablanca, reports the daily Al Ahdath Al Maghribia.
Cities like El Haouz, Moulay Yacoub, Khénifra, Al Hoceima, Chefchaouen and Tétouan have also been taken into account, adds the daily, which specifies that 17 other video surveillance projects are under study or being implemented in 12 governorates and provinces. These projects, implemented in partnership with local authorities and local development companies (LDCs), aim to strengthen security in the different provinces of the kingdom, while respecting the privacy and freedom of citizens, assured the Minister of the Interior.
Surveillance cameras contribute to the maintenance of public security, as they ensure a rapid intervention of the security services in the face of crimes committed in public spaces and facilitate the conduct of investigations opened, also points out Abdelouafi Laftit, specifying that video surveillance also plays a role in the regulation of traffic in order to avoid traffic jams and in the management of mass demonstrations.
