Morocco Expands Religious Infrastructure: 172 New Mosques Built in 2021

During this year 2021, 172 new mosques have been built in Morocco, including 157 by private individuals and 15 by the government for an amount of 120 million dirhams (11.5 million euros).
During the presentation of his 2022 budget to the House of Advisors last week, the Minister of Habous and Islamic Affairs, Ahmed Taoufik, reviewed the achievements for this year. In this report to which EFE had access, the minister indicated that by the end of September, 157 mosques had been built in Morocco thanks to private financing.

He adds that 853 million dirhams (82 million euros) have been allocated for the management and maintenance of mosques and for the construction of new places of worship in the kingdom. Thus, the government has financed the construction of about fifteen mosques, both in urban areas, particularly "in popular neighborhoods to eliminate places of worship in poor condition," and in rural areas, he specifies.
Abroad, the government has built the Mohammed VI Mosque in Conakry (Guinea) and the Chenguit Mosque in Mauritania. It has also rehabilitated the Mohammed VI Mosque in Yamoussoukro (Côte d’Ivoire).
