Morocco Expands Maritime Sovereignty with New Laws on Territorial Waters

During the speech on the 44th anniversary of the Green March, the king Mohammed VI had stressed the need to define the territorial identity of Morocco. Two bills approved in January by the House of Representatives came into force on Monday, March 30.
Aimed at restoring the legal competence of the kingdom over its maritime space, the two bills intend to fill the legal void that characterizes the delimitation of maritime borders on the one hand, and "update the national legal system for maritime areas" which "date back to 1973, 1975 and 1981", had affirmed the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita.
The minister mentioned a third point at the origin of these legal provisions, namely the national legislative harmonization with the international commitments of the kingdom.
The two bills, published on Monday in issue 6869 of the Official Bulletin, will allow Morocco to establish its full sovereignty over all maritime areas, including those in the southern provinces.
