Morocco Expands Highway Network with Major Construction Projects

New highway projects are in the planning and construction stages in Morocco. The existing highways are not being left behind as they are also benefiting from improvements to facilitate traffic flow.
Among the projects, recalls L’Économiste, the widening of the Casablanca-Berrechid highway and the bypass road connecting the Nador West Med port to the Nador-Al Aroui international airport. Work on lots 2 and 3 has already progressed by more than 40%, according to Anouar Benazzouz, CEO of the Moroccan Motorway Company (ADM). He announces that the start of these works is imminent and will extend over four years, with completion scheduled for 2026.
In addition, the construction of the Guercif-Nador highway, an investment of more than 2 billion dirhams, has been unblocked. This project is an important milestone in the development of the region, improving its transport infrastructure and facilitating travel from the North and East to the South of the country.
Furthermore, the new highway between Rabat and Casablanca, a distance of 60 km, is still planned. Its objective is to alleviate the traffic on this crucial road corridor, with an estimated investment cost of 5 billion dirhams. The project provides for a direct link between the Rabat ring road (Tamesna) and the southern ring road of Casablanca (Tit Mellil). This is a project announced in 2016 to solve the problem related to the saturation of the A1 highway. This continental highway includes three major structures to cross the three wadis of Cherrat, Nfifikh and El Maleh.
These various projects are scheduled to be completed before 2030, in anticipation of the possible organization of the Football World Cup by Morocco, in collaboration with Spain and Portugal.
