Morocco's UN Envoy Rebukes Algeria Over Sahara Dispute at Security Council

The Permanent Representative of Morocco to the UN, Omar Hilale, firmly rebuked the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, who made erroneous statements about the Sahara and drew a parallel with Palestine, during a debate at the Security Council on "The role of youth in addressing security challenges in the Mediterranean".

"Peace and security in the region continue to be threatened by the disrespect for international law, the expansion of terrorism, interference in the internal affairs of neighboring countries, encouragement of separatism and the use of separatist armed groups linked to terrorism to threaten the territorial integrity of Member States in the region, as is the case for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco which has irreversibly recovered its Sahara in 1975," said Omar Hilale during this debate at the UN Security Council.

For decades, Morocco has adopted a humanistic, pragmatic and solidary immigration policy, which guarantees young migrants equal access to education, housing, health, vocational training and employment, recalled the Moroccan diplomat, before noting that "this is unfortunately not the case for neighboring countries that continue to subject migrants on their territories to the worst violations of their rights, including by abandoning them in the middle of the desert".

The Permanent Representative of Morocco to the UN also stressed the "daily" respect by all the countries of the Mediterranean for the principles of good neighborliness and the peaceful settlement of disputes "so that the Mare Nostrum becomes again truly our common sea, a sea of peace and hope for its young people". The Moroccan ambassador also highlighted the leading role played by Morocco in maintaining peace and security in the region, stressing the fight led by the kingdom, alongside the international community, against terrorism, violent extremism and organized transnational crime.

Morocco will continue to work for peace and stability in the region, in mutual respect, intercultural and civilizational dialogue, and with the cooperation of all neighbors, for the well-being of all the countries in the region, assured Omar Hilale who reaffirmed Morocco’s support for the Palestinian people and their legitimate right to self-determination, including the creation of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
