Morocco's UN Envoy Challenges Algeria's Stance on Western Sahara Conflict

The Algerian Chargé d’Affaires made a statement before the United Nations Council. This disengages Algeria from its responsibilities; he announces that this country "is not a party, but just an observer" in the Sahara file. The Permanent Representative of Morocco, Omar Hilale, responded to him dryly.

The Ambassador asked: "If Algeria is just an observer, why does it arm, finance, host and diplomatically mobilize for the "Polisario", an armed non-state separatist movement?". The speaker was referring to the civilians from the southern provinces, who are held hostage in the Tindouf camps, in "inhuman conditions".

He also mentioned Algeria’s hatred of Morocco, instilled in primary school children, Algeria’s multiple interventions with diplomatic missions, the division of the territory, the non-compliance with international recommendations, as well as the diversion of humanitarian aid addressed to the populations in the camps.

"The international community has realized the deception created and maintained by Algeria and which no longer finds any echo anywhere in the world," he stressed, alluding to Salvador, which has just announced the withdrawal of its recognition of the "virtual republic" of the SADR. He adds that "the Government of El Salvador has expressed its support for the territorial integrity of Morocco and its national sovereignty, as well as its autonomy initiative as the only solution to this regional dispute".
