Morocco Ends Service Fees for Online Bill Payments, Competition Council Reports

Economic operators who continued to charge service fees to their customers when paying bills electronically have stopped this practice, the Competition Council announced on Tuesday.

"As part of the monitoring of the evolution of the practice of charging fees on the occasion of electronic bill payments, the Competition Council is pleased to announce that all economic operators concerned by the practice of billing service fees to customers have ceased these deductions," the Competition Council said in a statement.

The institution led by Ahmed Rahhou specified that it had succeeded, in collaboration with the actors concerned, in putting an end to this practice in the telecommunications sector, private educational institutions, delegated management companies and water and electricity distribution authorities, as well as the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE). At the beginning of 2024, other government services such as the General Directorate of Taxes (DGI) and the National Social Security Fund (CNSS), which had committed to ending this practice, have kept their promise.

"Thus, the Council congratulates all the actors concerned, their strong involvement has made it possible to provide, in a concerted and constructive framework, a definitive solution to this practice which undermines the interests of consumers and hinders the development of the digitalization of our economy," the note concluded.
