Morocco Ends Gas Subsidy, Redirects Funds to Social Programs for Vulnerable Groups

The government’s decision to remove the butane gas subsidy is timely and salutary in the sense that these financial resources will be used to strengthen direct aid to vulnerable groups, said Abdellatif Jouahri, Wali of Bank Al-Maghrib, on Tuesday.

The removal of this subsidy will benefit the most needy sectors, which will benefit from more resources. It will contribute to the financing of social protection projects and the provision of direct support to eligible groups, with the aim of strengthening social justice in the kingdom, Jouahri said during a press conference.

The Moroccan government has removed the gas subsidy to limit the impact of the rise in the price of this product on the most vulnerable groups, explained the Wali of Bank Al-Maghrib, noting that the agricultural sector is as affected by this measure as Moroccan families, and that a balanced solution was necessary.

This decision was inevitable, said economist Mohamed Jadri, arguing that the gas subsidy has benefited the rich and entrepreneurs more than middle and low-income families who do not consume more than two gas bottles per month.

In statements to Kech24, the expert invited the Executive to fight against intermediaries and speculators so that the rise in gas prices does not have repercussions on the prices of other products and on the daily life of Moroccans. It should be recalled that the government announced an increase in gas prices of 2.5 dirhams for the 3 kg bottle and 10 dirhams for the 12 kg bottle as of May 20.
