Morocco: The end of bread at 1.20 dirhams?

While the price of basic bread is maintained at 1.20 dirhams thanks to a subsidy from the Compensation Fund, Moroccan bakers are preparing to negotiate the future of bread with the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, Water and Forests.
This meeting, which marks the beginning of a sectoral dialogue, will allow baking professionals to assert their demands and express the difficulties they are facing.
The surge in prices of raw materials, particularly flour and fuel, is weighing heavily on production costs. Bakers want to obtain guarantees from the government to maintain the price of bread at a level accessible to Moroccan consumers. An increase in the price of bread, an essential food in Morocco, could indeed have significant consequences on purchasing power.
This is not the first time the profession has threatened to raise the price of bread. Until now, the government has always firmly opposed it. However, bakers hope that this dialogue will make it possible to find solutions to stabilize the sector and preserve their activity, while improving the working conditions of employees.
The meeting, initially scheduled several weeks ago, had been postponed following the ministerial reshuffle. Contact has been re-established with the new minister since he took office.
