Morocco Encroaches on Spanish Territory at Melilla Border, Experts Say

Morocco encroached on part of Spanish territory when establishing the no man’s land at the Melilla border in 2001.

The "no man’s land" at the border of Melilla with Morocco was created in 2001, after the construction of the fence intended to prevent the entry of migrants under the mandate of José María Aznar, according to well-informed sources at La Razón.

Morocco refused to have the fence erected on the markers that mark the true border between the two countries, encroaching on 5% of Spanish territory which has since been under its sovereignty. Morocco has even carried out infrastructure on this territory, the same source specifies.

This no man’s land was recently mentioned by the Spanish Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, who claims that the Melilla tragedy took place in this "community" zone. He made this statement after the BBC documentary on this case was released, revealing that migrants died on the Spanish side of the border.
