Morocco Emerges as World’s Second-Largest Green Bean Producer, Yield Tops 200,000 Tons

Green bean production is taking up more space in Morocco, with this year resulting in a large increase in production. The kingdom is now the second largest producer in terms of yield, with over 200,000 tons.
Cultivated on an area of more than 8,000 hectares compared to some 6,000 hectares in 2017, this vegetable is confirming its rise in Morocco, where its cultivation was low just twenty years ago. A great evolution that delights the strategists of the Green Morocco Plan which is coming to an end and whose new campaign launched last October is already well underway. Moreover, given the climatic diversity of the different production regions including Agadir, Skhirat, Mohammedia and Casablanca, it is possible that Morocco, which surpasses competitors like Kenya, will be able to supply quality beans throughout the year, especially on the European market where green bean consumption is increasing year after year, reports Challenge.
To recall, during the 2019-2020 export campaign, Morocco exported around 112,000 tons of green beans, an increase of 10% compared to the previous campaign. A feat that will certainly be surpassed during the current campaign, which already promises better days. Speaking of value, green beans rank second among the most exported vegetables in Morocco, behind tomatoes which are in the lead, with more than 500 million euros for more than 500,000 tons in volume.
