Morocco Emerges as Key Transit Hub for Cocaine Bound for Europe, UN Report Finds

Morocco has become a hub, a transit zone for Latin American cocaine destined for Europe. This is indicated in a report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
Tracing the new routes taken by international drug trafficking networks, the report places the kingdom at the top of the countries selected by Russian cartels to transport cocaine to Europe. It is followed by Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands.
The strategic positioning of the country in relation to Europe makes it a choice transit zone for major cocaine and drug traffickers, the report points out, noting that between 2015 and 2018, the largest seizures in Africa took place in Morocco.
In 2019, the figures were multiplied by four, thanks to the seizure of more than 20 tons of white powder across the continent, adds the UN report, which praises the Moroccan experience in the fight against drug trafficking.
In February 2019, a Russian vessel transporting 9.5 tons of cocaine destined for Portugal was intercepted before even transiting through the kingdom. 6 months later, no less than 3 tons of drugs were seized on the beach of Sidi Rahal.
