Morocco Embraces Solar Power: 30,000 Farms Adopt Photovoltaic Pumping Systems

In Morocco, photovoltaic solar panels (PV) are installed, at a rate of 8.8%, on some 30,000 farms, according to data released by the Moroccan Agency for Energy Efficiency (AMEE).
New developments in farm management. The study carried out on solar pumping, as part of the Project entitled "Promotion of the Development of Photovoltaic Pumping Systems for Irrigation" (GEF-Solar Pumping), has shown, according to InfoMédiaire, that large and semi-surface farms have decided to use PVP technology, with 76% of the installations financed from their own funds and 4% by bank credit.
This energy source is an opportunity, unlike other sources, for the State and farmers, in the field of agriculture, the report revealed, on Tuesday, June 25, 2019, during the working session of the National Technical Commission on Energy Efficiency. The meeting allowed participants to learn that PVPs are an excellent low-cost energy source, at 0.44 DH/m3.
Better, the study emphasizes that the use of the solar system remains competitive compared to diesel and butane. According to the results of the price per cubic meter, diesel is the most expensive energy source, at 1.67DH/m3, followed by electricity, at low voltage (0.98DH/m3), then butane (0.76DH/m3) and electricity, at medium voltage (0.78DH/m3), reports the same media.
To this end, the supervisory Ministry has put in place a series of promotional campaigns for actors, professionals, researchers and members of civil society, not to mention several thematic workshops, meetings and conferences on energy efficiency, at the central and regional levels, targeting mainly the agricultural sector, in the regions of Agadir, Béni Mellal and Oujda. This PVP project, launched in 2018, aims to establish an ideal framework for the implementation of the National Photovoltaic Pumping Program, the same source indicates.
