Morocco’s New Electronic ID Cards Omit Amazigh Script, Sparking Controversy

To the surprise of many, the members of the Interior Committee in the House of Representatives adopted the draft law on the electronic national identity card (CNIE). As a result, there is no presence of tifinagh on the CNIE.
The multiple reservations and amendments made during the discussions around the draft law on the CNIE were no longer taken into account. The Amazigh actors who attach importance to the presence of tifinagh on the CNIE did not see their request come to fruition. In a letter addressed to Parliament, they pleaded among other things for the amendment of articles 4 and 5 by including a provision to make the writing of the Amazigh language in tifinagh letters mandatory in this draft law.
After the adoption of this project, Morocco will have a CNIE without tifinagh but with the formula and specifications recommended by the government council, reports Al Massae.
