Morocco Election Rallies Spark COVID Concerns as NGOs Warn of Health Risks

In Morocco, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are warning about election rallies taking place without masks or physical distancing, even as the country faces a surge in Covid-19 infections and deaths.

These civil society actors are on the alert to prevent the health risk posed by the meetings organized by political parties as part of the election campaign for the professional chamber elections, reports the daily Al Massae.

In their denunciation, these actors indicate that the majority of the gatherings take place with participants who do not at all respect the preventive measures in force to fight against Covid-19. A behavior that risks accelerating the pace of the spread of the pandemic, at a time when Morocco is experiencing an epidemic rebound that recalls the tragedies of the first wave.

Faced with this drift, the candidates and political leaders are being pointed out, the newspaper adds, noting that they are accused of negligence and irresponsibility, as they themselves would not respect the authorized number of people in enclosed spaces. As a result, photos and video sequences circulating on social media show the participants in these meetings without masks and crowded together.

An appeal is therefore made to the authorities to fulfill their duty by monitoring the meetings and partisan activities organized as part of the election campaign for the professional chamber elections.
