Morocco’s Economy Faces Steep Recession Amid Africa’s COVID-19 Downturn

Morocco is one of the four countries most affected by the recession in Africa. A recession caused by the health crisis related to the coronavirus.
The forecasts of the African Development Bank (AfDB) indicate that the Moroccan economy is one of the four largest economies on the African continent likely to be affected by the contraction of its GDP in 2020. With a recession of (-3.3% to -4.6%), Morocco ranks fourth behind South Africa (-6.3% to -7.5%), Nigeria (-4.4% to 7.2% and Algeria (-4.4% to -5.4%).
Conversely, the economically weaker countries, namely Ethiopia (+3.6% to +2.6%), Kenya (+1.4% to +0.6%), Côte d’Ivoire (+3% to +1.5%) and Senegal (+2.8% to +0.1%) than these four largest African economies will not be affected by the recession, thanks to the diversification of their economies.
