Morocco Eases Restrictions on Hammams as Water Situation Improves

In Morocco, the Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, has given new instructions to the walis and governors of the regions regarding the decision to close hammams and car wash stations.
In response to a written question in the House of Representatives, the Minister of the Interior announced that he has given the governors of the regions and the agents of the prefectures and regions of the Kingdom free rein to adapt the decisions to close hammams and baths "according to the water situation in each region". A decision motivated by the improvement in the filling level of the dams.
It emerges from Abdelouafi Laftit’s explanations that his department has taken a set of procedures and measures concerning, in particular, sectors and activities known to be water-consuming, to cope with water stress. It is a question of avoiding sectors and activities known to be water-consuming, of reducing their days of operation, or of finding alternatives to drinking water.
According to the minister, the decision to partially close the hammams three days a week was imposed due to the scarcity of water resources. The objective is to mitigate water stress and rationalize water consumption in regions experiencing difficulties and a water resource crisis. This measure has certainly made it possible to somewhat resolve the problem, but Laftit insists on the importance of "further raising awareness among citizens of the importance of water and the need to manage this vital substance in a rational and responsible manner".
He calls on every Moroccan to play their part. "The efforts made to manage the water stress suffered by our country will only bear fruit and achieve the expected results with the strong contribution of citizens and their positive involvement in the implementation of all the decisions taken by the public authorities in this regard," he believes.
