Morocco Eases Lockdown for Eid Shopping as COVID-19 Cases Decline

The local authorities of Tetouan have given their approval for a temporary easing of confinement by allowing certain shops to open their doors during the last days of the Muslim fast. But this must be done in strict compliance with preventive measures and the ban on gatherings.

This exclusively concerns clothing, shoe and fabric stores, as well as the workshops of dressmakers, in high demand at this time of Eid. This decision was made by the local authorities, in coordination with the central administration, after a serious evaluation of the epidemiological situation in the city, marked by a significant improvement in recent days. It has already been two weeks since "the region has not recorded any new positive cases and has seen a significant increase in the number of people cured after being infected with the coronavirus," reports Le360.

With this decision to temporarily ease confinement, Tetouan is following in the footsteps of Al Hoceima and Chefchaouen. However, "the reopening authorization does not concern shops located in very crowded places, the Kissariats and closed spaces that lack ventilation." Sources close to the local authorities point out that "this temporary easing is conditional on strict compliance with physical distancing, frequent use of disinfectants and the ban on gatherings, whether in front of stores or in the streets of the city."

This measure began on Wednesday, May 20 and will last until the end of Ramadan, according to the authorities who call on "merchants to respect the opening and closing hours in force during the curfew," namely 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Any merchant who goes against these recommendations will see his store simply closed, the same source specifies.
