Morocco Eases Election Campaign Rules, Allowing Use of Royal Portraits and National Symbols

The request expressed by Moroccan political parties to lift the ban on the use of certain national symbols in the election campaign has just been met. The House of Representatives has just adopted by a majority the draft law on general electoral lists, referendum operations and the use of public audiovisual media during election and referendum campaigns.
It is now allowed to use the national anthem or the official portrait of the King in the halls hosting election campaign meetings. Before, such a thing could lead to serious sanctions that could go as far as the cancellation of the elections. On the proposal of the Commission on the Interior, Territorial Communities, Housing and Urban Policy at the House of Representatives, the adopted bill provides for the lifting of the ban on the use of the national flag.
The law also provides for provisions relating to the procedure for the restricted revision of electoral lists on the eve of partial communal, regional or legislative elections, as well as the procedure that details the modalities for the exceptional revision of general electoral lists. Thus, for the next general elections, the text provides for a period of 30 days for the registration of new voters and for the filing of transfer requests.
