Morocco Discovers Major Lithium Deposit, Boosting Renewable Energy Prospects

Morocco has discovered "significant quantities" of lithium, located in the border area with Mauritania. A deposit that suggests the kingdom’s independence from this raw material and a strengthening of the renewable energy sector.
According to the physical chemist, inventor of lithium-ion batteries, Rachid Yazami, the exploitation of this treasure could propel the dynamics of the energy transition initiated by the kingdom at a time when the boom in the electric vehicle industry is fueling a significant increase in global demand for lithium and cobalt.
Speaking at the Annual Meeting of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, held on May 11 and 12, 2022 in Marrakech, the scientist stated that this is good news, which could strengthen Morocco’s position as a global producer of renewable energies.
Several countries have started drilling operations to extract this metal, he pointed out, specifying that he himself has received an invitation from Saudi Arabia to explore the possibility of extracting lithium.
