Morocco Deploys High-Tech Drones to Combat Forest Fires Amid Heatwave

In this period of heat wave, Morocco is pulling out all the stops to fight the devastating phenomenon of forest fires. German drones equipped with Israeli systems are being deployed to monitor high-risk forest areas and prevent any fire, whether intentional or unintentional.
The drones deployed by Morocco have thermal cameras at night and can be operational at low altitude, describes Al Massae, specifying that this initiative is part of the 2020-2030 strategy of the High Commission for Water and Forests and the Fight against Desertification (HCEFLCD).
The initiative makes it possible to capitalize on new technologies to fight ecological disasters and anticipate any suspicious gesture in forest areas. This strategy, already launched in the provinces of Boulemane and Taza, will soon be extended to the other regions of the kingdom.
To recall, in 2020, forest fires devastated an area of about 1277 hectares in several regions of the country over eight months, down 30% compared to the period from 2010 to 2020. Thus, in 2020, Morocco recorded 157 forest fires, down 45% compared to the average recorded over the past ten years. 80% of the devastated area was recorded in a single fire reported in the Mdiq region.
