Morocco Denies Ban on Women Staying in Local Hotels, Minister Clarifies

A circular from the Ministry of the Interior would have prohibited women from staying in a hotel in their city of residence. Questioned on the issue by the deputy of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP) Moulay Mehdi El Fathemy, the minister Abdelouafi formally denies it.
The question comes up again and bears the same signature. That of Deputy Moulay Mehdi El Fathemy. But this time, the minister has seen fit to provide clarifications. "The Ministry of the Interior has never given instructions requiring hoteliers and tourist establishments to prohibit Moroccan women from spending the night in hotels located in the cities of their residence," stressing that the investigations carried out to verify this state of affairs have revealed nothing and that no complaint has been recorded so far.
However, according to testimonies collected by Medias24 from the director of a luxury hotel in Casablanca, "the police ordered them to refuse accommodation to Casablanca women who come without their husband." According to the police, this would be a measure to fight against debauchery.
In his written question, the USFP deputy claims that "this ban is a violation of women’s rights, goes against the Constitution and undermines the principle of equality."
