Morocco Delays Reopening Mosques Amid Ongoing Health Concerns

The Supreme Council of Ulema announced, last Wednesday, that mosques will be reopened at the right time, in consultation with the Ministry of Health and the competent authorities.
In its statement, the Council recalled the importance of taking into account the evolution of the epidemiological situation in the country, however stressing that the lifting of restrictions on places of worship will take place when the health situation in the country allows it.
For the Supreme Council of Ulema, certain prerequisites in Islam are essential for the performance of prayer in mosques, including:
• Group prayer in the Maliki doctrine requires perfect alignment of the ranks, without leaving empty spaces between the faithful
• The first condition of prayer is serenity. The believer should not be under the effect of the fear of any misfortune
• The first pillar of prayer is faith. Doubt has no place there
• The control of barrier measures is impossible to carry out in more than 50,000 mosques that the kingdom has
• The risk of developing clusters is high within mosques
• Performing prayer at home by necessity or at the mosque is equally rewarded in the current conditions.
