Morocco Defends Immigration Efforts After Melilla Border Incidents

The Moroccan government said on Thursday it had mobilized huge resources to curb illegal immigration after the massive assault of several hundred sub-Saharan Africans at the Melilla border.
When questioned about the two Melilla incidents, government spokesman Mustapha Baitas asserted that Morocco has "mobilized huge resources regarding irregular immigration".
"Morocco, as it has stated on several occasions, is mobilizing huge resources for the migration issue and the control of its 3,500 km coastline".
Baitas indicated that Morocco has opted for a "humanitarian approach" in dealing with the migration issue, recalling that it is not only a transit country but also a host country.
He also stressed that the European Union is "an important partner of Morocco in the management of the migratory flow".
Note that some 350 sub-Saharan migrants, in the early hours of Thursday, managed to scale the fence separating Morocco and Melilla, a day after 491 had managed to reach the autonomous city.
