Morocco Defeats Canada 3-0 World Cup Efficiency

After the 3-0 thrashing of Canada, Opta statistics tell a colder story than post-match declarations. Morocco didn’t create a flood of chances, but struck with ruthless efficiency, driven by Ounahi, Bounou and Rahimi.

Morocco Defeats Canada 3-0 World Cup Efficiency

Jesse Marsch can claim that Canada was "the best team". The numbers, however, tell quite another story: that of a Morocco who let the storm pass before punishing their opponent with clinical precision.

Against Canada, the Lions of the Atlas didn’t need to overwhelm the match through sheer volume. According to Opta data, Morocco finished the match with only five shots. But four were on target, and three ended up in the net. In a World Cup round of 16, it’s hard to be more efficient than that.

This efficiency is even more striking when you look at expected goals. Morocco generated only 0.817 xG over the entire match. This means the Lions didn’t accumulate clear-cut chances, but transformed almost everything they got.

The symbol of this realism is called Azzedine Ounahi. With an Opta rating of 9.30, the Moroccan midfielder was his team’s best-rated player. Two shots, two on target, two goals: his match alone sums up Moroccan coldness against a Canadian team more talkative after the final whistle than dangerous on the scoreboard.

A victory of maturity rather than domination

Canada did have their moment, especially in the first half. Mohamed Ouahbi himself acknowledged it after the match, evoking Canadian intensity and Yassine Bounou’s decisive save. The Moroccan goalkeeper finishes with three saves and an 8.00 rating, Morocco’s second-best evaluation according to Opta.

That’s where the match turned. Canada pushed, but Bounou shut the door. Morocco waited, adjusted, then struck. In the second half, Ouahbi’s adjustments allowed the Lions to better control opposing pressure and attack more in depth.

Soufiane Rahimi’s introduction also weighed heavily. A substitute initially, he finishes with a 7.90 rating, three shots, two on target, one goal and one shot off the bar. His presence gave more verticality to Morocco’s attack after Ismael Saibari’s injury exit.

Behind the three standout men, other key players stepped up. Achraf Hakimi, rated 7.68, again delivered on his flank, while Brahim Diaz, credited with two assists by Opta, played a direct role in Morocco’s finishing. In defense, Diop also weighed in on the build-up with 75 passes.
