Morocco Debates Shift from French to English in Education System

For a few weeks now, many Moroccan internet users have launched a campaign on social media calling for the "removal" of the French language from the education policy. For them, the use of this language has placed Morocco at the bottom of the global ranking of education systems.
On the internet, the activists claim that this language change will help Morocco regain national sovereignty. To this end, they urge the authorities to use the national languages (Arabic and Berber) as well as English as the language of science and openness to the world.
Those who want to see the country make this change promote the idea that "Morocco is not a province of France." According to their explanations, French is not only the language of the colonizer, it is also outdated and impractical. The state’s education policy promoting French has led to the fact that Morocco occupies one of the last places in the ranking of education systems in the world, they denounced.
This anti-French campaign comes at a time when Emmanuel Macron is announced to visit Morocco in October. The activists also point to the visa crisis that erupted due to Paris’ decision to drastically reduce the number of visas issued to citizens of all Maghreb countries.
