Morocco Debates Hammam Closures as Water Conservation Measure Reaches Parliament

Rather than closing public baths to rationalize water, Socialist Party deputy Majida Chahid proposes to set the capacity of these establishments or determine the amount of water to be used per customer.
In an oral question on the decision to partially close hammams taken by the Ministry of the Interior to rationalize water, Chahid insisted on the negative impacts of this decision on the living conditions of workers in this sector, asking the government if support measures are planned for these professionals.
The deputy also noted that the measure will not allow water to be rationalized, as these public baths will experience a strong influx on the days they are open and consequently, will use more water to satisfy their customers. For greater efficiency, Chahid recommends rather setting the capacity of these establishments or determining the amount of water to be used per customer.
