Morocco's Death Row: Study Reveals Demographics of 59 Condemned Prisoners

In Morocco, 59 people sentenced to death are languishing in prison, awaiting the execution of the sentence. Of these death row inmates, half are between 20 and 40 years old, according to a study published by the Moroccan Coalition against the Death Penalty.

The same study, presented in Rabat on the World Day Against the Death Penalty and reported by 2m.ma, reveals that 98% of them are men and 29% are married. Moreover, of these married people, it appears that more than three-quarters have between 1 and 2 children and 25% have 3 to 6 children.

According to the same study, most of these detainees, sentenced to deprivation of liberty, are found in the large penitentiary establishments of Tangier, Kenitra and Safi, with 82% of them in individual cells.

The study also shows that 18% of those sentenced to death have already lost contact with their loved ones, for various reasons.

Furthermore, two-thirds of the detained parents of children said they did not receive visits from their children. According to the same document, 65% of these detainees have requested royal pardon.

It should be noted that 90% of the people surveyed suffer from illnesses (63% psychological and 37% chronic) for which most receive medical care, although 12% said they have no follow-up for theirs.

It should be noted that the death penalty, although not effective since 1994, continues to be pronounced by some courts in the kingdom.
