Morocco: Curtain call for GenZ 212
The GenZ 212 collective has announced the end of the "first phase of its peaceful movement", welcoming the success of its action which has "contributed to stimulating a national debate on the priorities of Moroccan society and to making the voice and sufferings of youth heard at the national and international levels".
This "first phase of the movement has made it possible to break the wall of silence and revive the spirit of political and militant awareness among thousands of young people in Morocco," said GenZ 212 in a statement. The movement announces that it "is now entering a phase of reorganizing the ranks, of collective reflection and constructive self-criticism, in preparation for the launch of the second chapter of the movement, which it hopes will be stronger, more effective and better structured".
The collective of young Moroccans also specified that "this organizational phase in no way means that the movement has stopped or weakened; on the contrary, it represents an important opportunity to reorganize the ranks, strengthen the organizational structure of the movement and prepare for the next stage of the movement with more strength, efficiency and impact at all levels".
GenZ 212 did not fail to reaffirm its determination to "continue its struggle to achieve its just and legitimate demands, at the forefront of which are the release of all detainees, the guarantee of fundamental rights in terms of health, education and dignity, as well as the fight against corruption and the accountability of those who have misappropriated public funds".
The movement announced its withdrawal after massive demonstrations launched since September 27 last across the kingdom. The collective called for urgent reforms in the education and health sectors, to promote youth employment and to strengthen the fight against corruption. The demonstrations, peaceful at first, later degenerated, leading to three deaths and injuries, as well as significant material damage.
