Morocco Cracks Down on Unauthorized Drones Amid Security Concerns

The Moroccan authorities are on alert in the face of the proliferation of drones in the airspace. Aware of the danger these flying devices pose to the population and on the territory, they are taking measures to control their flight.

While on the population side, this raises many questions, the authorities are taking steps not to be taken by surprise, especially since these suspicious drones have sophisticated cameras capable of filming remotely and accurately.

According to sources cited by the newspaper Al Ahdath Al Maghribia, an alert has been issued at the level of the Royal Gendarmerie, after the appearance of a remotely piloted device that was flying over the city of Marrakech, raising questions and concerns among the population. Its owner was immediately arrested and questioned before being brought before the competent prosecutor’s office.

This phenomenon has been on the rise in recent times, the same sources point out. Another drone had been spotted a few days earlier, flying at low altitude over the emblematic Jemaa El-Fna square, filming the activities animating the space, not to mention the old medina of the city which has also been the victim of overflights by the same type of device.

Despite some arrests, other drones violate the airspace and tend to cross the red line. This is the case of one launched by a foreign tourist from a tourist site and which flew over the royal residence and its surroundings. For now, the authorities are trying to control the circuits of these devices introduced into the country.
