Morocco Cracks Down: Over 100 Local Officials Dismissed for Corruption

The Ministry of the Interior is currently carrying out a purge within the municipal elected officials. About a hundred people are concerned.
In total, 33 commune presidents, 15 vice-presidents and 34 members of local councils have been dismissed and are also being prosecuted for acts contrary to the laws and regulations in force, undermining the ethics of the public service and the interests of the commune, indicates a report from the Ministry of the Interior.
In detail, 21 elected officials and municipal officials have been brought to justice for "misappropriation of funds" and "falsification of public documents during the performance of their duties".
For its part, the Court of Auditors has sanctioned 26 other commune presidents and their deputies for offenses related to the budget and financial affairs of their commune. Similarly, 27 commune presidents have been relieved of their duties, in accordance with the application of Article 70 of the organic law on communes.
After the transmission of their files to the Administrative Court, 84 members of the councils of local authorities were fired, details the same report. 56 presidents and members of municipal councils suffered the same fate, in application of the provisions of Article 64 of the organic law on communes.
The same source also states that 81 other members of municipal councils were dismissed for violating Article 51 of the organic law on communes and Article 20 of the organic law on political parties. They had indeed changed political parties.
