Morocco Cracks Down on Military Service Exemption Abuse Amid Controversy

Friday 12 April 2019, by Bladi.net

For a few days, a controversy has been raging over the temporary or permanent exemption to be granted to young people who would like to avoid military service. Very quickly, the Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, who is keen to guarantee the principle of equality between all citizens, has warned against any manipulation of exemption certificates.

Faced with the controversy that has been fueled for some time now on the issuance of exemption certificates for military service, the Minister of the Interior has spoken out.
Abdelouafi Laftit has clearly stated that "the exemption falls within the prerogatives of commissions composed of representatives of ministries, as well as specialists". This reaction from the minister follows the desire of certain people to evade it.

Indeed, since April 2, all the lists of people called upon to fill out the census form have been drawn up by the ad-hoc central commission. According to Al Massae, these lists would contain "the names of the sons of personalities and authority agents".

For the Ministry of the Interior, the lists transmitted to the services of the prefectures and provinces "have taken into account the principle of equality between citizens and balance between the regions" and it would not be acceptable to exploit legal loopholes to avoid service.

Persons who may benefit from exemption

Persons wishing to benefit from the exception must address their requests to the local administrative authorities, accompanied by documents likely to justify their physical incapacity. Once transferred to the prefectural commissions, these requests will be examined by the walis who will make the final decisions known.
