Morocco Cracks Down on Illegal Butane-Powered Vehicles Amid Fuel Price Surge

To cope with the continuous rise in fuel prices, some motorists have found a solution: driving on butane gas. Moroccan authorities threaten to crack down.
Some motorists have made technical modifications to the engines of their vehicles to run them on butane gas instead of gasoline or diesel in order to save on fuel costs. But this practice is dangerous, as these vehicles can explode at any time and cause significant damage, worries the daily Al Akhbar.
The phenomenon is not new, but has gained momentum, particularly in Nador where the gendarmerie elements are determined to track down these butane-powered vehicles. After a large-scale campaign in this province, they fined several unscrupulous motorists and impounded and impounded about ten vehicles whose engines had been modified to run on gas.
This practice is also very widespread among clandestine transporters, especially in rural areas, the daily adds, noting that butane gas is one of the substances whose explosion is very devastating. Vehicles running on butane gas also pose the problem of insurance, but the agents have above all repressed the transport of any object likely to endanger the lives of passengers.
The security services take this phenomenon very seriously. The DGSN recently sent a circular to its services to give clear instructions to strengthen the control of vehicles and to sanction those who drive on gas.
